Waiting for a new or renewed passport can become stressful once the expected delivery date gets close. The most confusing part is often seeing that the passport has been dispatched but not knowing whether it has reached the passport office or is ready for collection.
passport dispatch status tells you where your Pakistani passport is in the final stage of processing and delivery. Once a passport leaves the production facility, it is sent toward the relevant Regional Passport Office (RPO), Foreign Mission, or applicable delivery destination. Applicants can receive status information through DGI&P’s SMS 9988 service, email notifications, or official support channels.
This guide explains what passport dispatch actually means, how to track your application, what different updates may indicate, and what to do when a dispatched passport takes longer than expected.
What Does passport dispatch status Mean?
A passport goes through several stages before it reaches the applicant. “Dispatched” generally means the passport has completed the relevant production stage and has been sent onward for delivery.
For applications submitted at a passport office in Pakistan, that normally means the document is traveling from the production facility toward the concerned Regional Passport Office or another designated collection point.
For eligible online applications or overseas cases, the delivery route can differ.
The Directorate General of Immigration & Passports (DGI&P), which operates under Pakistan’s Ministry of Interior, specifically notes that passports dispatched from its production facility can take additional shipment time to reach their destination, including an RPO or Foreign Mission.
That distinction matters:
Dispatched does not necessarily mean ready for collection.
There can be a gap between the date a passport leaves production and the date it arrives at the office where the applicant will receive it.
Passport processing vs. passport dispatch
These two terms describe different stages.
| Status or Stage | What It Generally Means |
|---|---|
| Application submitted | Your passport request has been entered into the system |
| Processing | Application checks and required processing are underway |
| Production/printing | Passport is moving through document production |
| Dispatched | Passport has left the production facility for its destination |
| Received at destination | Passport has reached the relevant office or delivery point |
| Ready for collection | Applicant can proceed according to the collection instructions |
| Delivered | Passport has been handed over or delivered through the applicable method |
A dispatch notification is therefore a positive sign, but it should not automatically be treated as a collection notice.
How to Check passport dispatch status in Pakistan
DGI&P provides several official channels for passport status information. The most useful method depends on whether you applied inside Pakistan, through an overseas mission, or through the online passport service.
1. Check SMS notifications from 9988
One of the main passport tracking mechanisms in Pakistan is the DGI&P SMS system.
Applicants are asked to provide a correct mobile number during the data-entry stage of the passport application. DGI&P uses its 9988 short code to communicate passport application status information.
Check the phone number you supplied when applying, including older messages you may have overlooked.
The SMS may provide information about the progress of your passport or indicate that it has moved to a later processing or delivery stage.
DGI&P continues to identify 9988 as its passport status notification service, and a 2026 government procurement notice also describes the short code as being used to provide passport status and service feedback electronically.
2. Use your passport tracking information
Keep your application token and tracking information available until you physically receive the passport.
Depending on how and where you applied, useful details can include:
- passport tracking ID
- original token
- CNIC or NICOP information
- application details
- registered mobile number
- registered email address
- previous passport number for a renewal
Do not discard the original token simply because you have received a dispatch message. DGI&P’s current application process says applicants collecting a passport should visit the Passport Delivery counter with the original token on the given collection date.
3. Check your registered email
Email is especially important for overseas Pakistanis.
DGI&P’s Email Rabta Service was introduced to send passport application status information to overseas applicants using the email address supplied with the application.
Check your inbox as well as:
- spam
- junk
- promotions
- updates
- blocked-sender folders
Search for terms such as “passport,” “DGI&P,” “tracking,” and your application or tracking number.
An email update can sometimes explain a status that is unclear from an SMS alone.
4. Contact the DGI&P helpline when necessary
If your passport remains in a dispatch stage for an unusually long period, contact DGI&P rather than relying on unofficial tracking websites or social-media claims.
The official DGI&P website currently lists these general contact channels:
National helpline: 051-111-344-777
International: 0092-51-111-344-777
Email: info@dgip.gov.pk
The published helpline hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Have your identifying and tracking details ready before contacting support. This makes it easier for staff to locate the relevant application.
DGI&P Passport Application Process
How Long After Passport Dispatch Does Delivery Take?
There is no single shipment time that applies to every dispatched passport.
DGI&P explains that even when passports are dispatched from the production facility within the prescribed processing period, they can require additional shipment time before reaching the relevant Regional Passport Office or Foreign Mission.
This means two separate timelines should be considered:
Processing time is the period required to process and produce the passport.
Shipment time is the additional period required for the finished document to move from production to its destination.
A person may therefore see a dispatch update while the passport is still physically in transit.
Why dispatch and collection dates can differ
A passport does not instantly appear at the delivery counter when its system status changes.
The document may still need to:
- leave the production facility,
- enter the shipment process,
- travel to the relevant city or Foreign Mission,
- be received by the destination office,
- be entered into the local receiving workflow, and
- become available for collection or final delivery.
This is why immediately visiting the passport office after seeing “dispatched” may result in a wasted trip.
Quick takeaway: Treat “dispatched” as confirmation that the passport has moved into the delivery stage—not necessarily confirmation that it is already waiting at the counter.
Passport Dispatch Status for Normal, Urgent, and Fast Track Applications
Pakistan offers different passport processing categories, and the category selected at application can affect the expected production timeline.
However, the basic meaning of dispatch remains similar: the completed document has moved from production toward its delivery destination.
Normal passport applications
A normal application follows the standard processing workflow. Once processing and production are complete, the passport moves toward the relevant delivery location.
The applicant should continue monitoring official SMS or email notifications rather than assuming that the original estimated date guarantees the passport has physically arrived.
Urgent passport applications
Urgent processing is intended to shorten the passport-processing period compared with the normal category.
A common mistake is to interpret the urgent processing timeframe as a guaranteed courier arrival time. Shipment to an RPO or Foreign Mission can still add time after production.
Fast Track passport applications
Fast Track is another expedited passport service available in designated locations. DGI&P announced in January 2025 that the service had expanded to 47 cities across Pakistan, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Sargodha, Mianwali and others.
Applicants using Fast Track should still distinguish between processing and final shipment. A passport that has been produced quickly may nevertheless require transportation to its destination.
What Happens After a Passport Is Dispatched?
Once you receive a passport dispatch status update, the next step depends on your application route.
For a standard office-based application, the passport typically moves toward the relevant passport office for collection.
DGI&P’s current application procedure says that after completion of the required stages, the applicant visits the Passport Delivery counter with the original token on the specified date. It also states that the passport can be delivered to the applicant or their blood relative, subject to the applicable requirements.
Should you visit the passport office immediately?
Usually, a dispatch update alone is not a good reason to rush to the office.
Wait for the relevant collection/status notification or verify that the passport has reached its destination.
This is particularly sensible when:
- the dispatch update was received very recently;
- the RPO is in another city;
- your application involves a Foreign Mission;
- a weekend or public holiday falls within the shipment period;
- you have not yet received a collection-related update.
A short transit period after dispatch is normal because DGI&P itself distinguishes dispatch from arrival at the destination.
Why Is My Passport Dispatched but Not Received?
Seeing no further movement after dispatch does not automatically mean your passport is lost.
Several ordinary factors can explain the delay.
Shipment between production and the RPO
The most straightforward explanation is that the passport is still traveling from the production facility to the relevant Regional Passport Office.
The electronic status may change before the physical shipment reaches the office.
Foreign Mission transit
Overseas applicants may face a longer physical delivery chain because the document must reach the relevant Foreign Mission or applicable delivery destination.
DGI&P specifically recognizes shipment time to both RPOs and Foreign Missions in its passport process guidance.
Weekend or public holiday
A dispatch near a weekend or holiday can make the elapsed calendar time look longer than the actual working-day transit period.
Receiving and sorting
Physical arrival and availability at a delivery counter are not always simultaneous.
A shipment may need to be received, recorded, sorted, and transferred to the appropriate delivery point before collection.
Incorrect contact details
An applicant can miss an otherwise successful status notification if the mobile number or email address supplied during data entry was incorrect.
DGI&P repeatedly advises applicants to provide a valid mobile number and email address so status updates can reach them through SMS 9988 or Email Rabta.
What to Do If passport dispatch status Does Not Change
A status that remains unchanged for a short period does not necessarily require intervention. The right response depends on how long the passport has been in transit and whether its expected delivery period has already passed.
Step 1: Check when the dispatch notification arrived
Record the exact date of the SMS or email.
Do not judge the delay solely from your original application date. Once the passport has been dispatched, the relevant question is how much time has passed since that dispatch event.
Step 2: Review your messages carefully
Check the mobile number and email address supplied with your application.
Look for:
- SMS messages from 9988,
- DGI&P emails,
- collection notifications,
- requests for further information, and
- delivery-related messages.
For an online application, email deserves particular attention because DGI&P may use it for application-related communication.
Step 3: Keep your original token and tracking ID ready
Your tracking information helps distinguish your case from thousands of other passport applications.
If you contact an office or helpline, provide accurate details rather than relying only on your name.
Step 4: Allow reasonable shipment time
If the passport was dispatched recently, allow for physical transportation.
DGI&P explicitly warns that dispatched passports can require shipment time before reaching their respective RPO or Foreign Mission.
Step 5: Contact official support if the delay becomes excessive
If the expected period has passed and there is still no useful update, contact DGI&P through its official helpline or email.
Explain:
- when you applied,
- which processing category you selected,
- where you applied,
- when you received the dispatch message,
- your tracking details, and
- whether you have received any subsequent SMS or email.
This gives support staff a clearer picture of where the problem may be occurring.
Tracking an Online Passport Application
Online passport applications have additional support channels.
DGI&P asks people making online-passport queries to provide their:
- complete name,
- contact number,
- Online Tracking ID,
- CNIC number for Pakistani applicants,
- passport number where applicable, and
- contact address.
The department lists mrponline@dgip.gov.pk for online passport matters and onlinedelivery@dgip.gov.pk specifically for online passport delivery issues. It also publishes 0092-51-8482202 for the Online Passport Section.
These channels are more appropriate for an online delivery problem than assuming the Passport Fee Asaan system provides passport shipment tracking.
Passport Fee Asaan status is not the same thing
This distinction causes considerable confusion.
The Passport Fee Asaan app and web portal include status functions related to passport fee payments and complaints. DGI&P describes the service as allowing users to check the status of a payment or complaint.
A successful fee-payment status should therefore not be interpreted as your physical passport’s dispatch or delivery status.
Passport Dispatch for Overseas Pakistanis
For overseas Pakistanis, communication and delivery can work differently from an application submitted at a Regional Passport Office in Pakistan.
DGI&P’s Email Rabta Service was created specifically to update overseas Pakistanis about their passport applications using the email addresses they provide.
For that reason, overseas applicants should monitor email closely.
If the passport has been dispatched but has not arrived at the Foreign Mission or expected destination, remember that international or mission-related shipment can introduce a gap between production and final receipt.
Online overseas applications
DGI&P says its online passport service allows eligible overseas Pakistanis to apply remotely. The department reported that, by December 2021, approximately 720,000 passports had been dispatched and received by applicants at their doorsteps through the service without requiring a visit to a Foreign Mission.
For a delivery problem involving an online application, use the online delivery contact channel and include the requested tracking and identity information.
Can You Track a Pakistani Passport by CNIC?
Your CNIC is an important identifier, but applicants should not assume that every official status service works as a simple public CNIC-only tracking page.
The safest approach is to retain the passport tracking ID or original application token and use the official status channels associated with the application.
For online passport support, DGI&P specifically requests both the Online Tracking ID and CNIC number from Pakistani applicants making a query.
That combination helps officials identify the correct application.
Avoid entering your CNIC, passport number, tracking ID, or other personal details into unofficial websites that claim to provide passport tracking unless you have independently verified their legitimacy.
What If You Did Not Receive an SMS From 9988?
Not receiving an SMS does not by itself prove that your passport application has stopped.
DGI&P says applicants need to provide a valid mobile number at the data-entry stage so passport status information can be communicated through SMS from 9988.
If no SMS arrives:
- confirm which phone number you provided;
- check whether SMS filtering or blocking is enabled;
- review your registered email;
- keep your application token and tracking ID available;
- contact DGI&P if the expected processing period has passed.
Do not submit a second passport application simply because an SMS notification did not arrive.
Does “Dispatched” Mean the Passport Is Ready for Collection?
No. A dispatched passport may still be traveling to its destination.
This is one of the most useful distinctions to understand when tracking a Pakistani passport.
DGI&P states that passports dispatched from its production facility may require shipment time before reaching their respective RPO or Foreign Mission.
Think of the process this way:
Produced → Dispatched → In transit → Destination office → Collection/delivery
The precise wording of notifications can vary, but the physical document still has to complete the journey.
If you live far from the passport office, confirming that the document is actually available before traveling can save considerable time.
Who Can Collect the Passport?
According to DGI&P’s published passport application process, an applicant should bring the original token to the Passport Delivery counter for collection.
The department also states that a passport may be delivered to the applicant or their blood relative.
Because identity and authorization requirements can matter at collection, take the relevant original documents and follow any instructions printed on your token or provided by the passport office.
For unusual circumstances, verify requirements with the concerned office before sending another person.
What About Passport Home Delivery?
Home delivery should not be confused with ordinary passport-office dispatch.
DGI&P launched a passport home-delivery pilot for Islamabad and Rawalpindi in 2021. Its published page describes the service as allowing passports to be delivered to the applicant’s doorstep after successful submission of a Machine Readable Passport application. The page still describes the service in the context of those twin cities, so applicants should verify current eligibility rather than assume home delivery is available everywhere.
For online passport applications, separate delivery procedures and support channels may apply.
The key is to follow the delivery method attached to your particular application rather than assuming every dispatched passport is being couriered to your home.
Common Passport Tracking Mistakes to Avoid
Most tracking problems are made more confusing by a few simple mistakes.
Treating “dispatched” as “ready for collection.” These are not necessarily the same stage.
Checking only SMS. Overseas and online applicants should pay close attention to email as well.
Losing the original token. Keep it until your passport has been collected successfully.
Confusing fee status with passport status. Passport Fee Asaan can show payment and complaint information; that is different from tracking the physical passport.
Using unofficial tracking websites. Sensitive information such as CNIC numbers, passport details, and tracking IDs should be handled carefully.
Visiting the office immediately after dispatch. Allow for the shipment period unless you have confirmation that the passport has arrived.
Ignoring contact-detail errors. An incorrect mobile number or email can prevent otherwise valid notifications from reaching you.
When Should You Contact DGI&P About a Delayed Passport?
Contact DGI&P when the delay has gone beyond the expected processing and reasonable shipment period, when the information you have received is contradictory, or when an online passport appears to have a delivery problem.
Before calling or emailing, gather:
| Information | Why You May Need It |
|---|---|
| Full name | Identifies the applicant |
| CNIC/NICOP | Confirms applicant details |
| Tracking ID | Locates the application |
| Original token | Contains application information |
| Application date | Establishes the timeline |
| Processing category | Shows normal, urgent, or other service type |
| Passport office | Identifies the relevant RPO |
| Dispatch date | Helps assess shipment delay |
| Registered phone/email | Helps check notification issues |
For online passport matters, follow DGI&P’s specific online support instructions rather than sending incomplete queries.
If your case involves a time-sensitive Hajj passport delay, DGI&P also operates a Hajj complaints facility. Its guidance asks complainants to provide accurate details including CNIC, contact number, and the relevant Passport Tracking ID.
How to Read Your Passport Status Without Panicking
Passport tracking terminology sounds more definitive than it sometimes is.
A useful way to interpret the main stages is:
- Processing: your application is still being handled.
- Printing/production: the physical passport is being prepared.
- Dispatched: the finished passport has left the production facility toward its destination.
- Received/ready: the document has reached the relevant destination and is moving into collection or delivery.
- Delivered: the process is complete.
If your passport dispatch status says the document has been dispatched, the most important next step is usually to monitor the official DGI&P notification channels and allow for shipment time.
DGI&P’s current guidance makes clear that a passport can be dispatched within the prescribed processing period yet still need additional time to reach its Regional Passport Office or Foreign Mission.
Keep your original token and tracking ID safe, monitor SMS messages from 9988, check your registered email, and use official DGI&P support if the passport does not arrive within a reasonable period. That approach gives you the clearest picture of your passport’s progress without confusing dispatch with final delivery.
